I used to waste my weekends, by waste I mean sleep in super late, lay in bed even longer (typically too long if it was paired with a hangover), and sloth around until half the day was gone. I would then have minimal time to enjoy a day off before it was time to do #adult and obligation chores like laundry, grocery shopping, and cleaning before the next work week. I dreaded Mondays which was a mixture of feeling unfulfilled at my job as well as feeling like I was constantly running on "empty". I woke up Monday feeling like I didn't accomplish as much as I had wanted and vowing to make the "next weekend" more productive. These past few years I have given my weekends and work week a much needed makeover and I hope this can help you do that to!
These days I go to bed Sunday evening feeling rested, content, and downright excited for my Monday! Yes I am that annoying person on Monday morning who is all "New Week, New Start, New Goals!" but hey when was the last time you posted a negative meme about wishing it was Friday and felt BETTER about your life? Great then keep reading. I think that you can be #suzymchappypants too if you take advantage of your weekend and SUPER THE F out of it. Keep in mind, this post is not realistic for those of us who have mini humans to care for but even if you can take advantage of a few of these tips then I feel good, and thats really what this #selfish blog is for, right? I understand this is far more manageable in our current DINK household ("Dual Income No Kids") but hopefully this post will provide some fresh ideas, new activities to try, and the importance of taking at least ONE day per week to fill your soul tank up and enjoy whatever city you live in to the fullest! (insert eye roll)
A few tips before we get started to maximize your #superday
- Plan ahead: use this list to spark some ideas, try some new things, and re-discover your city, plan your #superday ahead of time and it will give you something to look forward to during your work week and ensure you maximize your day.
- Set an alarm: I know you are thinking "ok Mandi we get it, you are an early bird, do you want an award?" But seriously set an alarm, it doesn't have to be for some crazy early hour, just set it so you have a starting point for your day and you don't accidentally wake up at 11 am in confused state wondering how you slept for 12 hours all while sun shines on your face begging you to GET UP. I can tell you, if I didn't set an alarm for us I would still wake up because I have reset my internal clock to wake up earlier than any other human I know, but my husband would sleep "accidentally" until 11 if I didn't. Although he hates admitting it, sleeping his morning away isn't usually how he wants to spend his one day off, but waking up sprawled on my side of the bed will likely never change. Scott romance = both of us sleeping on my side of the bed because #love.
- Check the weather: Even if it rains you can plan around it! The summer is short here and usually fairly dry but check ahead anyways.
- Memories over Materials: ensure your day is focused on activities and events versus spending. These #superdays can quickly turn into expensive adventures if you are lazy, don't plan, or just simply don't make a conscious effort to make memories over materials. Scott if you are reading this don't be silly I still want that Gucci belt, materials still matter #littlebitboujee.
#SUPERDAY: SUMMER EDITION
*Disclaimer: this is my blog therefore what I do on a typical #supersaturday so it caters to a #basic stereotypical lover of food, local vendors, outdoor activities, and the occasional cocktail #wineislife.
7:00 - 7:30 AM Wake up to the beautiful hum of your alarm and in the summer season the sun shining in! Don't rush, take your time, and enjoy the quiet moments and rare ability to just lay still before jumping out of bed to start the day. I say this as more of a suggestion as being the goldfish that I am I have a hard time with this one. I wake up typically before my alarm especially in the summer because #grandmalife and wait anxiously for Scott to wake up so we can start the day. Again I realize how annoying this is, but #wemarried so he knew what he was getting into.
8:30 AM Sweat a little or a lot. For us this typically means throwing on our gym clothes and heading to our favorite fitness facility Motion Fitness Saskatoon. We like getting there nice and early before the 10 AM rush and taking our time. On weekdays its always semi rushed workout before the day begins so on weekends we love being able to change it up, take our time, or cut it short and opt for an outdoor run! Takeaway: get your heart rate up, sweat a little, work up on appetite because our #superday involves yummy local food and treats. Yes I realize that "it's the weekend, and you deserve to rest" but these days "deserve" is #nextlevel and everyone takes #treatyoself far too literally so please just stop making excuses and do some fitness #thehardthingabouthardthings.
10:00-11:00 Head to your favorite brunch spot. For us this means our absolutely favorite local hidden gem Scarlet which is inside the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel in #dtnyxe It faces the river, has a great view, great service, and consistently great food. There is never a long wait time and staff make a habit of remembering faces, and always accommodating picky eaters #sideofthis #nobutter #removethis #addthis #shutup. They have a surprisingly fresh, unique menu that you would not expect from a hotel restaurant that makes it a almost #always for us. Runner up: Drift Vista Lounge in Riversdale is slowly becoming a #superday favorite especially in the spring/summer when the upstairs is open and breezy and you feel like you have transported to an island far far away. The menu features local ingredients and whimsical twists on classics like the "Diefenbaker Benny, and "Calimex Sammy". Sometimes we struggle with #trendy food stops because we are #basic but this little #yxe cafe is consistent, and delicious even if we don't always fit in with the "regulars" who are far more cool and #ontrend than we can ever hope to be #saynotomanbuns.
12:00 PM Farmers Market: We almost always take a stroll through the local farmers market, even if we don't have anything in mind to buy, and often we leave empty handed because #mindfulspending but we always like to take a quick peak at what the local market has to offer each week. A few of our favorite vendors include Those Girls at the Market, they offer amazing organic raw chocolate bars that have no fillers, and minimal ingredients that make you feel good about indulging. Floating Gardens for fresh herbs, lettuce, cucumbers, and baby carrots as well as other seasonal items. Benlock Farms for fresh local meat and the newest edition: Soul Foods Grocer. They offer health food in bulk, kombucha on tap, and a great #vibes. Yes I am turning into one of those people that says "vibes" and attempts to eat for #health. Not to worry the once weekly #chemical energy drink in combination with my excessive use of hashtags keeps me the #sarcastic contradiction you know and LOVE.
12:30 Riversdale Walk: After the farmers market we usually walk over to 20th street where a few of our favorite local spots reside. Typically we stop at Collective Coffee for a delicious iced Americano and pop into Little Bird Patisserie for their monthly feature cruffin. If you have not tried one of these yet, run and get one asap, they are a buttery delectable croissant in muffin form with a custard filling and different flavor variation depending on the month. We usually "split" this which typically means I have two bites and my #alwayshungry husband eats the rest. Honourable mentions: depending on the week we also may pop into Thrive Juice for a yummy healthy dessert "truffle" or Scott's go to juice the "Enerchi" which he likes because it is a local alternative to his forever favorite overpriced "Mama Chia" sugarbomb. Green Ark Collected Home is always fun to stop if we need a weird, generally inappropriate in the best way, card for any occasion. They also carry great eclectic gift options like locally handmade jewelry, and beautifully crafted furniture. Finally Hard Pressed is a great edition to #yxe and what we like to refer to as "our kind" of #hipster that allows you to support local business but does not venture too far into #nonbasic territory #sorrynotsorry. Essentially they make Saskatoon Souvenirs for #coolkids, they carefully curate what they sell which allows you to leave the store with a unique but quality item each and every time. #minimalistlife #lessismore.
1:30-3:30 PM Outdoor activity time! This varies but right now "we" are into golfing. I say "we" because its generally ME who goes through "phases" admittedly I am a bit of a squirrel when it comes to activities and I go through phases of obsession with certain activities. My husband is generally up for #allofthethings so it makes him a great companion for #superday. Golf can be very spendy, I know I am breaking my above mentioned rule about making #superday affordable but hear me out. The driving range is only $10-20 dollars and allows for a solid 1-2 hours of golfing fun without the hefty price tag of a round of actual golf. If you are a #newb like me this is great option to learn, make mistakes, and still enjoy without throwing away $60+ dollars on 100000 swing and misses. Splurge after a few sessions and go for 9 holes every few times and its a nice outdoor treat that can include a cart beverage or two. Newb Pro Tip: have a twisted tea or two and you will gain some liquid confidence and actually hit the ball, some of the time #basicallyagolfpronow. Other options: Take a long walk around the beautiful bridges and pick out your favorite dream house on university drive. Go grab a delicious ice cream from a Saskatoon institution Homestead Ice cream on VIctoria Ave. They also offer locally sourced fruit sorbet for those of us who suffer from #dairymakesyouscary like moi.
4:00-6:00 PM Nap, seriously when else can you just lay down and sleep with no guilt? Do it. This is a suggestion but as stated above I have a hard time #calmingthefdown but I try and at least relax for an hour or two.
6:00-8:00 PM Try a new or favorite local eatery: we alternate between going to favorites like Earls #garlicfries and Congress Beer House #charcuterie and trying something new. For us we have a constant ongoing list of new places we want to try or an older place that we haven't been in far to long. Some new places we have recently tried: Sticks & Stones, a new Japanese/Korean inspired restaurant opened by the owners of Ayden Kitchen & Bar, and Little Grouse and we just tried Cathedral Social Hall, a unique craft beer restaurant downtown. It seems like it will be a fantastic option to satisfy a variety of tastes with vegetarian options and a fairly robust wine list! Both impressed us and we will definitely be back. #spoileralertwewentbackalready
8:30-9:00 PM Dessert / Night Cap: We often leave room for a tasty treat after our meal out and this ranges from season to season or simply what we are in the mood for. Newest find: D'Lish by Tish Cafe near broadway and temperance which hosts a variety of homemade indulgent desserts with extra attention to #fire cheesecakes such as skor, butterscotch confetti, peanut butter cup. They also have THE BEST carrotcake I have had in this city. The cream cheese to cake ratio is #onpoint. Runner up: Scarlet or 612 for their beignets which I have raved about in a previous post, and Ayden Kitchen & Bar for their dessert feature that is consistently delicious and pairs beautifully with one of their crafted cocktails. #boujeelife
The familiarity of our #superday has become something we crave and value and it has completely transformed our perspective on Saskatchewan and curated a fresh outlook on our work week. I believe anyone in any city can follow this and discover new things, support local business, and become that person on Monday who oozes happiness! It's the "little things" that really make this #life thing a gift. Cheesy? Sure. Worth it. Absolutely.
In closing I hope you enjoyed this weeks #foreverbasic post filled with selfish indulgences, day time cocktails, local favorites, and far to many #hashtags.
Yours in all things NEW NEW,
